Inspect Vehicles Carefully

To avoid misunderstandings, both carriers and shippers should inspect vehicles for any body damage both during pickup and delivery. Be sure to inspect the vehicle in sufficient light, and include the roof and under the front and rear bumpers — areas that are sometimes overlooked.

Carriers should have multi-copy bills of lading, should identify any damage prior to pickup on the bill of lading, and provide a copy of the pickup inspection to the pickup party. Likewise, at the time of delivery shippers should note any damage on the bill of lading and keep a copy signed by the driver.

Documenting damage protects both carriers and shippers in the event of a damage claim.
